The village of Dowery is in danger, not from imps, serpent kings, giant spiders, fat witches, or wolfcats, but from the worst monsters in all the land. Trolls, great hulking beasts, descend annually from the nearby mountain, stealing the harvest food and wreaking havoc. Every year a warrior goes up the mountain to fight the troll and every year the man disappears and a new troll descends.

When a series of accidents, calamities, and childish bad decisions cause the harvest storehouse to be ruined, young Willem realizes he has doomed his home to the wrath of an unfed troll. Rashly, he takes it upon himself to brave the dangers beyond his home, scale the dreadful mountain, and do the impossible. He will slay the beast and rid his village of the horror that they face every year.
